Open Ye the Gates!<\/strong>
\nThe New Synagogue Berlin in Oranienburger Street was opened in 1866 and used to be one of the best-known places of Jewish worship in Germany. It was not only a newly erected and magnificent building, but also a place for new rituals: an organ, a mixed choir, a prayer book in German, and the first female Rabbi in the world (who was ordained in 1935). Today, one of the remaining rooms is used as a synagogue, and once again its congregation is introducing innovations. We will visit the contemporary synagogue as well as the permanent exhibition and explore themes of tradition and modernity. And we will talk about themes such as hope, uncertainty, destruction, Jewish self-determination.<\/p>\n

\nGemeinsam werden wir das Haus mit seinen noch erhaltenen Teilen und den Spuren der Zerst\u00f6rung, die heute im Haus genutzte Synagoge und unsere Dauerausstellung erkunden. Viele Geschichten, die sich in der Oranienburger Stra\u00dfe zugetragen haben und die von ge\u00f6ffneten Pforten mit hebr\u00e4ischen Buchstaben und Ruinen, von Hochzeiten und mutigen Polizisten, Propheten und Rabbinerinnen, von Hoffnung und Zerst\u00f6rung handeln, begleiten unseren Weg. Immer geht es dabei um Ambivalenzen, Perspektivwechsel, Selbst- und Fremdbestimmung \u2013 und h\u00e4ufig auch um Sprache, ihre religi\u00f6se Bedeutung und ihren allt\u00e4glichen Gebrauch.<\/p>\n

\nBunt, engagiert und gef\u00e4hrdet: <\/strong>
\nj\u00fcdisches Leben in der Spandauer Vorstadt und<\/strong>
\n im Scheunenviertel zwischen den Weltkriegen<\/strong><\/p>\n

Keine Klischees, keine Romantik: Mit diesem Stadtspaziergang tauchen wir ein in das j\u00fcdische Berlin der 1920er Jahre. Im Scheunenviertel und der Spandauer Vorstadt sp\u00fcren wir den Orten nach, an denen alteingesessene deutsche Juden auf die neuen j\u00fcdischen Zuwanderer aus Osteuropa trafen, die in Folge von Krieg, Hunger und Vertreibung in Berlin eine neue Heimat suchten. Wir entdecken das bunte Mosaik aus Theatern, Gesch\u00e4ften, Schulen, Vereinen und Synagogen in denen sich das Leben dieser Menschen abspielte. Wir erfahren \u00fcber das Scheunenviertelpogrom 1923 und die wehrhafte Selbstverteidigung j\u00fcdischer Kriegsveteranen. Und wir lernen Pers\u00f6nlichkeiten wie die Dichterin Mascha Kaleko oder den Sozialarbeiter Siegfried Lehmann kennen, die zu Protagonisten dieser lebendigen j\u00fcdischen Kultur geh\u00f6rten.

Wir zeigen Ihnen die vielf\u00e4ltigen Aspekte dieses Ortes: j\u00fcdisches Leben in Berlin seit 1866, die heute im Geb\u00e4ude befindliche Synagoge, religi\u00f6se Traditionen, Br\u00e4uche und Diskussionen. Und auch f\u00fcr die Kleinsten gibt es Interessantes zu entdecken: eine Tora-Rolle, Zedaka-B\u00fcchsen und Mesusot an den T\u00fcrpfosten.<\/p>\n
