SUMMARY:Synagogues\, Prayer Rooms and Colleges: Diverse Jewish Religious Practices in the Spandauer Vorstadt
DESCRIPTION:Starting in August and continuing through November\, we’ll be offering a themed city walking tour on the first Sunday of every month; you can usually find this tour on the digital map on our website\, https://jewishmitteberlin.de.What was everyday life like in the Scheunenviertel? Where did the famous poet Mascha Kaléko live in the Scheunenviertel? What kinds of synagogues and Jewish religious institutions were there in Berlin Mitte? Why did a pogrom take place in the heart of Berlin 10 years before the Nazi dictatorship? You’ll find answers to these and many other questions on our guided tours! \n\n\n\nToday\, there’s hardly anything left to see of it\, but the Spandauer Vorstadt and the Scheunenviertel were once a center of Jewish life in Berlin. Spandauer Vorstadt owes its name to the Spandauer Tor\, part of Berlin’s 17th-century fortifications. Today\, the S-Bahn line between Hackescher Markt and Alexanderplatz roughly follows its route. \n\n\n\nThe area north of the Spandauer Tor—that is\, outside the city—was called Spandauer Vorstadt. Due to violence and expulsions\, there was no continuous Jewish community in Berlin for a long time. In 1671\, several Jewish families who were on the verge of being expelled from Vienna were invited to Brandenburg-Prussia. \n\n\n\nSince they were forbidden to build a synagogue\, the first Jewish institution in Spandauer Vorstadt was a cemetery\, which the families established shortly after their arrival. The area was sparsely populated and lay outside the city walls\, making it particularly suitable as the site for Berlin’s first Jewish cemetery. Its remains are located today on Große Hamburger Straße. \n\n\n\nAugust 2 | 2:00 p.m.City walk/Guided TourStarting point: In front of the New Synagogue BerlinRegistration required! \n\n\n\n\nRegistration
